At last a Bittern!

I had seen a bitten at RSPB Ham Wall once or twice in the past but never got anywhere near photographing one. During my recent tour of the Somerset Levels with Mike Dilger, we visited the first viewing platform at Ham Wall each day – staying for between 30 and 60 minutes each time but without success for a bittern (though with some great action with Marsh harriers seen each day and even a female Hen harrier on one day – quartering the reeds). When we arrived on our last morning - at about 7am - a bittern was clearly visible sitting out in the open on the edge of the reeds on the far right! After ten minutes it took off and flew away - round and almost over our heads! Time was then called for breakfast!
